Interview of Beatriz Palacios

INTERVIEW - The Future Eve - New collection by Beatriz Palacios

The new collection of Beatriz Palacios, "The Future Eve", is now available online on Made & More. Beatriz surprised us again with a pure, thin, and delicate new collection of jewelries. We met this amazing woman and asked her a few question about her, and about her new collection. Interview.

Can you remind us who you are?
My name is Beatriz. I’m the designer of the jewelry brand Beatriz Palacios. I’m also the CEO of the company. I’m a jeweler but my real status is mining engineer. I love so much jewelry that I decided to learn with jeweler experts how to make them. Four years ago I felt strong enough to create my first collection. I created the brand, the image, the website, everything. Then I decided to show my collection to professionals and decided to start with trade shows in Paris. I think Paris it’s the best place to start something like this.

Why did you start the making of jewelry five years ago? And why did you decide to launch your own label?
Since I was a kid I’d make jewelry but that was not my own jewelry design. I put pieces together that I found in supermarkets. It was simple things and I felt frustrated because the pieces I found were made by other people and I only could put them together. That’s why I decided to learn how to make a jewel from the beginning. I got in touch with a jeweler who worked in Madrid with me. I asked him to teach me how to make jewels. For two years, during my evenings, nights and weekends, I learned how to make jewelries on my own. That's how everything began, five years ago.

It's not only business, she cares about people
and I find that very important.

How do you see yourself in the future?
I want to grow slowly despite the fact that I see the brand growing and growing. I want to grow again, but I don’t want to be too big. I just want to make a living from my passion, without compromising the quality and the design.  So, I don’t want to become a big big company because when you are big you don’t have time anymore for the design. The design is the most important part of the creation!

Could you tell me more about your new collection “The Future Eve”?  Why did you choose this name?
The name is the title of a French book of the 19th century, “The Future Eve" of Auguste de L'Isle- Adam. It is one of the first book of science fiction. The story is about a man who asks Thomas Edisson to create a woman who looks like his wife but who is actually a robot. The entire collection is a connection with the robot universe and Android because of the mechanism of the parts/pieces. For example, the parts of the jewelry with swans were assembled like orthopedic parts. Therefore, I thought the name of the book was perfect to represent my collection.

What inspired you for making this collection?
The book is very complex. The hero of the story didn’t love his wife because she wasn’t beautiful enough for him. But I wanted beautiful jewelry ! It is mainly the esthetics of the book that inspired me and not its content. I am strongly inspired by this very orthopedic and Android universe. I create a lot of retro-futuristic pieces. But the real origin of the Future Eve collection comes from a trip to Berlin in January 2015. I was on the top floor of the Neues Museum, which was completely empty. And there was that kind of device for the teeth. It looked like a jewel, certainly not very pretty but I loved the use of gold and pearls. From this object, I thought about the esthetic of the object, how could I turn that into a jewel. The initial idea of this collection comes from this little story.

How much time did it take to make the collection ?
The collection was developed more or less in four months. I started with online research to find what I was looking for during two weeks. Then I developed prototypes and I tested them because if something goes wrong, I have to solve it. Thanks to prototypes, you can realize what's wrong and you can rethink this idea. I create 45 pieces per collection, I have work until summer 2017 ! I need so much time to design, that’s really the most important part of the brand. Putting everything together is really difficult. This job is more than just an idea! What takes a lot of time is to solve all technical problems.

Inspired by the robots and orthopedics universe, can you describe the jewels of the collection "The Future Eve"?
The pieces are really really feminine, thin and elegant. I wanted delicate pieces in this collection.

How did you make this collection? With which precious stones and material?
In this collection, I used materials such as silver, gold, and a lot of precious stones such as granite, green amethyst and white topaz. For the metal part, I used gold plated silver and real yellow gold. I work with a master jeweler who is in charge of the technical parts. He told me how to solve all technical issues. I also work with a specialist who is in charge of cutting stones. My job is to work the metal parts of the jewelry. There is also another workshop in Madrid, in charge of the porcelain. I am in charge of the design and all the metal parts. The size of the precious stones and porcelain pieces is realised by a specialist. Then, all parts are assembled together in my workshop in Madrid.

Why did you choose to collaborate with Made & More?
I met Stephanie 3 years ago, in Paris, when Made & More project was still just an idea. We were at the same level as I was beginning too. I fell in love with the project ! I really love what she wants to offer on her website and the way she treats the designers, products and tailors. She cares about people and I find that very important. I have the same values for my brand.
I love working with Made & More, it delights me so much! In fact, it is quite rare today to find a company which understands how you work, your products and the values of your brand. Made & More is very attentive to this, which is why it was obvious to work with Stéphanie...
